16 March 2003 - Suffolk v Norfolk

MEN’S A

The 2002 season ended with the Men's A team winning the Regional Championship.  2003 started once again with Suffolk having to play Norfolk.  Suffolk got off to a good start and won the first session 7-4.  Norfolk pulled back a little in the second session, but still trailed 12 frames to 10. Suffolk responded stepping up a gear to take the third session 8 frames to 3 bringing their lead 20-13.  Suffolk required just three more frames from the last session to win the match. In the event they took five frames to win the match 25-19.

An excellent start of season performance by the whole team, with six players winning 3 out of 4 (Alan Mower, Paul Keeble, Steve Kane, Mark Keeble, Samm Bemment and Sean Whelan).

MEN’S B

Up against last year's winners, Norfolk, Suffolk really required a good start in this match.  Unfortunately for Suffolk, Norfolk's B Team were living up to their championship standard and took the first session 7 frames to 4.

Suffolk made a slight come-back, taking the second session, 6-5 only to lose the third session by the same amount.  With the match score currently standing at 18-15, and with one session to go, Suffolk were still three frames behind.  Suffolk made a valiant effort in the last session but were only able to pull back one frame to finish the match losing 23-21.

A fair result against last year's champions. Excellent results from new trialists Chris Cass winning all four frames and Conor Ward winning three out of four.

YOUTHS

This could have been a very different match for Suffolk as Norfolk have this year returned to the Region's Youth event after a 3-4 year absence and were therefore of an unknown quantity.

However, Suffolk stamped their authority on this match right from the start and at the end of the first session had established a 9-2 advantage.  Norfolk rallied a little in the 2nd leg but Suffolk pulled forward to lead 18-6.

Suffolk were now in no mood to let this slip an extended their advantage taking the next five frames in a row.  The third leg ended 25 frames to 8 with 11 frames still to play.

Suffolk's experience over a young Norfolk side was very evident and took 8 of the remaining frames to secure a very comfortable 33 frames to 11 win overall.

Special mention to debut Suffolk youngster John Manning for 4 out of 4 along with Richard Twomey, Dylan Thomas, Mark Jones and Rory Vaughan who all won 4 out of 4.

Others of note Karl Sutton and Matt Purnell for 3 out of 4.

A sound performance all round and a well earned victory.

NEXT MATCH - 6 April, home to Bedfordshire
