13 May 2001 - Bedfordshire v Suffolk

MEN’S A

Suffolk A, were currently at the top of the table, but only just.  They wanted a good win against Bedfordshire to consolidate their lead.  Suffolk started how they meant to go on by taking the first session 7-4.  During the second session, Suffolk managed to increase their lead still further to 13-6 but Bedfordshire started to make a comeback taking the last three frames of the session.  Suffolk were now leading 13-9.

Bedfordshire took the first frame in the third session.  Suffolk responded with five on the trot and went on to finish the third session 20-13 up.  Suffolk needed three more frames to win the match but they needed to do better than this to be certain of remaining top of the regional table.  At the start of the fourth session, the frames went to and fro until Bedfordshire strung together a run of three frames.  Suffolk had not secured the match, still needing one frame.  They pulled out all the stops and took all five of the remaining frames to finish the day at 27-17.

Brilliant performances by Alan Mower and Ned Acton each winning 4 out of 4 frames.  Paul Keeble and Steve Kane each won 3 out of 4 frames.

MEN’S B

Suffolk B were also currently top of the regional rankings and really wanted to win this match.  The first session was a disaster for Suffolk, not winning a single point until the 10th frame.  Being 10-1 down after the first session it was going to be an up-hill struggle.  Suffolk started to dig in and won the second session 6-5.  In the third session Suffolk started to make a comeback winning 5 of the first 6 frames.  Alas their winning streak was cut short by Bedfordshire producing another massive run of 8 consecutive wins.  By this time, Bedfordshire had already won the match and were leading 24-12.  Realising that every frame was still important, each being worth a point on the regional tables, Suffolk took 6 of the last 8 frames to make the score a more respectable 26-18.

The best individual result was from Pete Cohen winning 3 out of his 4 frames.

LADIES

Suffolk Ladies were also currently top of the tables.  Suffolk started brilliantly only dropping 4 frames in the first session taking the lead with 7 frames to 4.  The second session was not to be as enjoyable for Suffolk as Bedfordshire responded with the same result that Suffolk had won the first session with.  The score was now 11 all.  As they went into the third session things were extremely close but Suffolk picked up their game and finished the session 18-15.  There was still a chance that Suffolk would come away from this with a loss, but the team pulled together and won 9 out of the remaining 11 frames and won the match 27-17.

Excellent performances by both Vikki Layton and Donna Green for winning 4 out of 4 frames.  Also good performances by Janette Skardon, Claire Seaman, Kim O'Brien for winning 3 out of 4 frames each.

JUNIORS

Suffolk Youths were playing catch up this month and needed a win.  Suffolk stormed into a 9-2 lead in the first session.  Bedfordshire were not going to stand for it and took the second session 6-5.  Bedfordshire who were not on a high, carried on taking frames off the Suffolk team and pulled the score back so that they were only a frame behind (16-17) at the end of the third session.  Suffolk were struggling, but Bedfordshire were not and took a further three frames putting them in the lead for the first time in the match.  Suffolk then fought back to go 20-19 ahead.  It was not enough as Bedfordshire ended the match with a 23-21 win.  Man of the match Craig Canham.

Next match will be at home against Essex on 10 June.
