18 March 2001 - Norfolk v Suffolk

<top>

An excellent start to the new season for Suffolk, with the Men’s A, Men’s B and Ladies all winning their first match of the season. The Youth Team was not playing this month, as there is no Youth team at Norfolk.

Suffolk went to Norfolk knowing that their first match of the season was going to be far from easy, especially after Norfolk Teams came top of the region last year.

Men’s Report

Following the County Trials, several new names have entered the men’s teams. So a very well done to Darren Belton, Robert Bullard, Peter Cohen, Lee Cubitt, Daniel Devido, Andrew Palmer, Rob Smith, Stephen Todd, Neil Twomey and Steve Warren. Not forgetting Paul Keeble, Mark Keeble and Stephen Lish who have joined the men from the Youth squad for which they played last season.

MEN’S A

The Men’s A had a good result. The match ended with a 21-23 win for Suffolk. After the first season it looked like Suffolk was fighting a losing battle with the score after 11 frames sitting at 9-2 to Norfolk. A massive turn around came in the second session with Suffolk bringing the score back to evens when taking the session 9-2. The third session seemed to be a lot closer with Norfolk only just taking the session 6-5, but once again Suffolk were not giving up. They played brilliantly and took the final session 7-4. The 11 men fighting for this result were S Lish, A Mower, P Keeble, S Kane, J Huggins, S Bemment, P Dyer, T Cook, N Acton, M Keeble and J Saunders. A good performance from A Mower, S Bemment and T Cook all winning 3 out of 4 games and to Paul and Mark Keeble for both winning 2 out of 4 games as new players.

MEN’S B

An excellent start to the new season for the Suffolk B team winning against Norfolk 25-19.

Following the county trials, several new names have entered the squad. Of particular note, newcomer Neil Twomey won three out of his four games and Richard Mann took four out of four. Another newcomer, Pete Cohen, came in as a substitute in the fourth session and won his frame.

Norfolk B were going to be a tough team to beat having been top of the region at the end of last season. The first of four sessions appeared fairly evenly matched. Suffolk kept taking the lead, but Norfolk kept on pulling back and after six frames the score was three all. Suffolk then took the next three frames to secure a 6-5 lead after the first session.

The next session was a completely different story. Suffolk took the next nine frames resulting in a 15-7 lead after two sessions. A good lead, but Suffolk could not afford to be complacent, Norfolk have a strong team and could easily pull back in the next two sessions Suffolk took six more frames in the third session and four in the last to finish the match with 25 frames to Norfolk’s 19.

LADIES

The Ladies match was not quite as close but nevertheless still a very difficult challenge. They were facing Norfolk, the runners up in the National Finals the previous week. Firstly well done to Vicki Bayliss, Zowie Button, Fran Calvert, Babs Foster, Shelley John and Kelly Robinson for making it through the trials.  Also welcoming to the team Janette Skardon.  The team that played at Norfolk consisted of T Acton, F Calvert, J Skardon, D Green, K Andrews, Z Archer, D Pullen, L Willett, C Seaman, V Layton and K O’Brien.  Not once was Suffolk trailing in the match.  The first session gave Suffolk a good lead as they took it 8-3.  As they went into the second session things stayed very much the same, ending the session with a 15-7 lead.  In the third session things took a turn for the worse, Norfolk were upping their game and took the session with a 6-5 win.  This was certainly not enough to discourage the Suffolk team and they went and won the final session with an 8-3 win as they did in the first, leaving the end result as a 28-16 win for the Suffolk Ladies.  An excellent performance from T Acton who won all four of her games. Also good performances from D Green, Z Archer, D Pullen, L Willett, V Layton and K O’Brien all winning three out of four.
