9 June 2002 - Essex v Suffolk

MEN’S A

Men's A are currently top of the Region Four tables, Suffolk needed to keep the momentum going. Things were not looking too good during the first session and Essex managed to take an 8-3 lead! Suffolk were going to have to work hard to turn things around.

The second session was better as they managed to pull back a frame to reduce the deficit to just four frames. It seemed that Suffolk had woken up and they took both the third and fourth sessions seven frames to four to clinch a close victory winning the match 23-21 and maintaining their unbeaten record so far this season.

Suffolk are currently on 123 points, 19 points ahead of second place rivals Bedfordshire and Norfolk.

Good performances by Steve Lish, Richard Mann, Alan Mower, Phil Cullingford and Michael Puntschart, each winning three out of four frames.

MEN’S B

The B Team also got off to a bad start and were 8-3 down after the first session. They managed to pull back to 13-9 down after two sessions. Suffolk started to make a comeback and nearly drew the match level when Essex made a final push and finished the match beating Suffolk 26 frames to 18.

Suffolk B are on 83 points, trailing Region Four leaders, Bedfordshire, on 114. Some serious work ahead for the B Team.

Best performances were from Nigel Betts, George Tiplady each winning three out of four frames.

LADIES

The Ladies team had some work to do after losing last month. They were determined not to let this happen again. Suffolk started very well taking the first seven frames. The first session ended with Suffolk leading 9-2. The second and third sessions were neck and neck with both Suffolk and Essex taking 11 frames each. Suffolk upped their game and took the final session 7-4. Ending the match with Suffolk winning with 27 frames to Essex’s 17.

Excellent performances saw Zanya Archer, Leah Willett, Janette Skardon and Trudy Acton each win 4 out of 4 frames. Also good performances saw K. O’Brien and V. Adams win 3 out of 4 each.

YOUTHS

This was always going to be a very tough match for the Suffolk Youth team. Essex got off to a good start and took the first session 7-4. They continued to stride on in the second session holding a 14-8 lead. In the third session Suffolk got their heads down and cut the deficit to 18-15. Taking 6 frames in a row in the process. Suffolk now keyed up determination not to lose and remain unbeaten so far this season. Suffolk clawed back to 20-18 to Essex but then took the next 5 frames to ensure they could not be beaten despite Essex taking the last frame.

Final score Suffolk 23, Essex 21.

Excellent performances saw Sam Jeffrey, Rory Vaughan, Matt Purnell and Dylan Thomas all win 3 out of 4.
