MEN’S A

The 2001 season ended with the Men's A team winning the Regional Championship. 2002 started once again with Suffolk having to play Norfolk. Suffolk were a little slow to get off and after the first session trailed 5-6. Norfolk's lead was short-lived, however, as Suffolk came to life in the second session taking it 8 frames to 3 to lead 13-9. The next two sessions had identical score lines so finally Suffolk A took a comfortable victory 29-15.

An excellent start of season performance by the whole team, many winning 3 out of 4 (Alan Mower, Steve Lish, Paul Keeble, Phil Cullingford, Phil Dyer and Ned Acton) and especially Samm Bemment who won 4 out of 4.

MEN’S B

The situation was effectively the opposite for the B Team with Suffolk B having to play against 2001 season Regional winners, Norfolk B. Suffolk got off to a shaky start losing the first session 5-6. They only managed to take four in the next session to trail 9-13. The Team Captain decided to make some substitutions in the third session in an effort to turn the game round.

Three new trialists came in as substitutes in the third session and won their frames to help pull Suffolk back to 15-18. With only three frames the difference, there was still everything to play for. Suffolk made a big push in the final session and took seven out of eleven frames to draw the final score level at 22 all. A good result against last year's champions.

Excellent results from the new trialists with Nigel Betts winning all four frames and Stephan Kempton and Sean Clements each winning 2 out of 2. Excellent result also from established player Sean Whelan winning all four frames.

LADIES

Suffolk Ladies were on a high after winning the 2001 region and going to the national finals and becoming national champions. The first session was extremely close between Suffolk and Norfolk Ladies with Suffolk just taking the first session 6-5. The second session was much better for the Suffolk side as they upped the pressure and won the second session 9-2. There was now a much more convincing score line of 15-7. The next session was much of the same, but the last session was not to be for the Suffolk side. They still had a convincing win of 26-18.

A great start to the season for the national champions, especially for Donna Creasey winning all four of her frames. Also good performances were put in by Fran Calvert, Jannett Skardon, Trudy Acton and Rebecca Ozborne. Well done to Kym Harris for making it through the county trials. Welcome to the team.

NEXT MATCH - 21 April, home to Cambridgeshire
